UKRAINE, May 27 — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sent a letter to United States President Donald Trump, warning of a critical shortage of air defense systems, including anti-ballistic missiles, reported Ukrainian media The Kyiv Independent, citing its sources.

Dmytro Lytvyn, the official president’s communications advisor, confirmed this information to journalists of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

This letter was preceded by a massive attack on Kyiv on the night of May 24. Zelenskyy said that Russia launched 90 missiles of different types, including 36 ballistic missiles, and 600 attack drones — Kyiv was the main target of this attack.

The next day, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Russian forces would conduct “systematic, continuous strikes” against Ukrainian defense infrastructure and “decision-making centers” in Kyiv.

“When it comes to air defense against missiles, we rely on our friends,” said the letter, described by the Kyiv Independent. Zelenskyy added that “when it comes to defending against ballistic missiles, we rely almost exclusively on the United States.”

The letter also said that the amount of weapons supplied through the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program — which allows NATO allies to fund the purchase of U.S. weapons for Ukraine — no longer reflects the actual level of threat facing Kyiv.

The Kyiv Independent source said that Olha Stefanishyna, Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States, is sharing this letter with White House staff, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and other members of Congress.
