UKRAINE, KHARKIV OBLAST, Jan 15 — As of January 6, 2025, over 523 thousand internally displaced persons (IDPs) are registered in Kharkiv Oblast, including 423,271 that were registered since February 24, 2022. These are the data provided by Ukraine’s Ministry of National Unity to Gwara Media’s official inquiry. 

Most (370,154) of the IDPs registered in Kharkiv Oblast are people from other communities of Kharkiv Oblast that have been threatened by Russia’s war or occupied by Russia. 

The second is the number of IDPs who came from Donetsk (70,435) and Luhansk (68,443) oblasts, which are the most affected by the Russian-Ukrainian war. Estimations of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) show that Russia currently occupies about 99% of the territory of Luhansk and about 66% territory of Donetsk Oblasts. 

Then, 3,502 IDPs registered in the Kharkiv region came from Sumy Oblast and 3,074 from Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

While most IDPs from Kharkiv Oblast remained in the region but moved to safer areas, 76,830 of them moved to Poltava Oblast, 34,734 to Lviv Oblast, and 34,013 people to Kyiv.

The fewest Kharkiv Oblast residents are registered as IDPs in Kherson (161) and Luhansk (188) oblasts. Also, one Kharkiv resident is registered as an IDP in Sevastopol (Crimea).

Because of the influx of people who were evacuated, displaced because of Russian aggression, Kharkiv volunteers plan to create a country-wide system of housing for evacuees.
