Italy became the 34th country to adopt the resolution. On July 26, the Italian Senate recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba announced this on Twitter.

“I am grateful to the Senate of Italy for recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. This important step restores historical justice, honors millions of victims and warns future generations against the crime of genocide,” Kuleba said.

In his evening speech, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy also thanked the upper house of the Italian legislature.

“The Italian Senate has decided today to recognize the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people. And this is very important,” the President said.

The draft resolution on recognizing the Holodomor as genocide was supported by 130 members of the Italian Senate; none voted against it, and four abstained.

What is Holodomor?

The Holodomor, which occurred in 1932-1933, was a famine that tragically struck the Ukrainian nation. Regrettably, the leadership of the Soviet Union was responsible for this devastating event, intending to suppress the Ukrainian people and eradicate their resistance to the regime, even thwarting their efforts to establish an independent Ukrainian state. This man-made catastrophe aimed to eliminate a significant part of the Ukrainian population.

Recognizing the Holodomor as genocide

Itay became the 34th country to recognize the Holodomor in Ukraine in 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. Many countries have also condemned the Holodomor as an act of extermination of humanity committed by the totalitarian Stalinist regime or honoured the memory of its victims.

Estonia was the first country to recognize the Holodomor of 1932-33 as genocide against the Ukrainian people. It happened in 1993. At that time, the Estonian parliament condemned the communist regime and honored the memory of Ukrainians who became victims of this tragedy.
