RUSSIA, OMSK, Jul. 6 — On Jul. 6, the Deep Strike units of the Special Operations Forces of Ukraine attacked the biggest Russian oil refinery located in Omsk, 3,000 kilometers (~1,864 miles) from the Ukrainian border. It is the first confirmed attack on this refinery, said the press service of the Special Operations Forces.
According to the military, it is the deepest Ukrainian attack on Russian territory during the full-scale war.
The attack caused a fire on the territory of the plant — reports say the oil refinery was hit at least twice.
The Omsk oil refinery is owned by Gazprom Neft, one of the largest Russian oil producers.
Analysts at Dnipro Osint reported that FP-1 drones attacked the plant’s processing units. The facility has a production capacity of 8.4 million metric tons of oil per year.
According to the Russian media outlet Meduza, as of the end of June this year, only two of Russia’s ten largest oil refineries remained undamaged — the Omsk refinery and the Angarsk petrochemical company in the Irkutsk oblast.
In August 2024, local Omsk authorities reported a fire at Omsk oil refinery, said Reuters, adding that the cause of the fire was not immediately clear. Several Russian oil refineries have been targeted by Ukrainian drone attacks, they reported. Kyiv did not confirm its involvement in the attack.
