The local museum staff managed to save a 300-year-old Gospel during the occupation of Izyum.
Currently, specialists from the Kharkiv Department of the National Research and Restoration Center of Ukraine have begun working on the renovation of this unique monument of the Ukrainian Baroque period.
According to the Department of Culture and Tourism of Kharkiv RMA, the local history museum in Izyum was heavily damaged by enemy shelling. Windows were smashed, the roof was damaged, and there was no electricity or heating.
“Due to Russian aggression, the museum building was damaged, making it difficult to preserve the paper of a valuable monument. After the de-occupation of the city, the Gospel was transported to more favourable conditions. Therefore, it was decided to carry out urgent conservation and restoration measures to stop the destructive processes that began in the book,” the department said.
During the Second World War, this Gospel was also hidden by a museum staff under the ground. And during the full-scale invasion, it was also buried under the museum building.
