UKRAINE, KHARKIV, Nov 5 — Mayor Ihor Terekhov talked with the French ambassador to Ukraine, and France promised to join the creation of an “energy island” in Kharkiv. Ihor Terekhov talked about the visit on Ukrainian TV.
In the spring of 2024, the Russian army attacked Ukrainian energy facilities with missiles and drone strikes. On May 8, the Prime Minister reported that they had destroyed or damaged 800 heating facilities in the country. In particular, the March attacks destroyed the power and heating infrastructure supplying Kharkiv and its region.
The mayor reminded that Kharkiv does not have its own electricity generation, and the city is powered by other regions.
“It is very important that we build our island to have a sustainable energy supply. The city’s activity and the way Kharkiv residents will live depend on it,” said Terekhov.
The mayor said he talked with the French ambassador to Ukraine to get France to help Kharkiv rebuild the “energy island.”
“We are so confident that we will build this island together and become energy independent. Yes, it takes some time, it is a certain procedure, it is construction, but we are moving in this direction. And I am confident that we will do it,” said Ihor Terekhov.
He noted that France will only take on some of the finances in this project. International partners and financial institutions will be involved in the construction of the “energy island”. The construction project will also use loans and grants from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
