UKRAINE, KHARKIV, Jan 17 — In 2024, the number of shelters in Kharkiv Oblast increased by 256, said Oleh Synehubov, the governor of Kharkiv Oblast. Also, 73 modular shelters have been installed in the region.

Oleh Syniehubov noted that, overall, the region has 4,811 objects of “facilities for civilian protection.”

Russia often attacks Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second city, located close to the frontline and about 19 miles from the state — in 2024 alone, Russia launched almost 4,000 attacks on the city.

Amidst Russian troops’ successes on the Kupiansk axis and relentless attack from the north of Kharkiv Oblast, local administration continues to build shelters in the city and its region.

As of December 5, 2024, Ukraine’s government allocated ~$633 million (2,7 billion hryvnias) to build shelters in educational facilities in the Kharkiv region.
