UKRAINE, Apr. 28 — Russian forces killed 349 artists and 137 Ukrainian and international media workers in Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion, said the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.

The Ministry said that this data not only indicates the scale of the losses, but also points to the recurring nature of tragic events in Ukraine:

“Just as the Stalinist regime killed a generation of Ukrainian artists in the 1920s and early 1930s (this period in Ukrainian history is called ‘Executed Renaissance’ — ed.), today, Russia is systematically killing Ukraine’s cultural figures.”

Also, the Ministry noted that Russia’s systematic crimes against journalists and the media pose a serious threat to freedom of speech and information security, and undermine democratic values and human rights.

In October 2025, a Russian FPV drone killed French photojournalist Antoni Lallican and injured Heorgiy Ivanchenko, Ukrainian photojournalist.
