Jul. 2 — Russian battlefield casualties and fatalities are greater than Ukrainian. In the first half of 2026, the rate of Russian casualties compared to Ukrainian has likely risen to nearly 8:1, said the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS).

Earlier, CSIS said that the Russia-Ukraine casualty ratio was between 2:1 and 3:1 (two and three Russian casualties for every one Ukrainian casualty) for much of the full-scale war. In March 2026, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian President, said that for every Russian wounded soldier, there are nearly two killed.

According to CSIS estimates, Russian forces suffered approximately 1.4 million battlefield casualties, including killed, wounded, and missing soldiers, between February 2022 and June 2026.

“These casualty numbers have increasingly become a problem for Russian recruitment,” said CSIS’ researchers.

Also, the center said that Ukrainian forces have suffered 525,000-625,000 casualties, including killed, wounded, and missing, between February 2022 and June 2026.

Combined Russian and Ukrainian casualties have exceeded 2 million during the same period, the CSIS added.
