UKRAINE, KHARKIV OBLAST, Apr. 16 — The dam of the Pechenihy reservoir in the Chuhuiv district has been temporarily closed because of a recent Russian attack, said Petro Tokar, the head of regional police, to local media Suspilne Kharkiv.

On Apr. 14, Russian forces attacked the Pechenihy dam with six glide bombs. The Ukrainian military said that the dam wasn’t damaged.

The Pechenihy reservoir is located 45 kilometers (28 miles) from the frontline, north of Kharkiv. The dam is one of the largest reservoirs in the Kharkiv region and is also an important logistics object.

Tokar said that the road via the dam enabled a shorter route to the Velykyi Burluk community on the other side of the Donets river. After Russian attacks, logistics routes have changed, and people are using alternative routes, he noted.

As for Apr. 16, according to Tokar, traffic on the dam has been temporarily stopped, and only special vehicles are allowed to pass.

“The dam needs to be inspected by qualified specialists,” he said.

This year, Russian forces attacked the Pechenihy dam already, and, in 2025, they launched five airstrikes on it, noted the head of the regional police.

The dam still functions as a hydraulic barrier — Tokar said that there is no uncontrolled water flow from it in the aftermath of the attack
