Nov. 6 — Mariana Katzarova, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Russia, released a report that exposed systematic torture, unlawful persecution, and cruel treatment of Ukrainians held captive in Russia, Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s Ombudsman, said.
As of Aug. 1 of this year, 438 Ukrainians had died in Russian captivity. They included both civilians and military personnel.
The report also talked about the unlawful persecution of soldiers from the 12th Special Forces Brigade Azov — Russia is trying them on fabricated charges of terrorism.
The document also mentioned the death of Ukrainian journalist Viktoria Roshchyna in Russian captivity.
Lubinets supported Katzarova’s call for an independent investigation into Russian crimes and for those responsible to be brought to justice.
“Possible mechanisms include the International Criminal Court, universal jurisdiction, and targeted sanctions against those involved in torture,” he added.
