UKRAINE, KHERSON OBLAST, Oct. 6 — Ukrainian attacks destroyed one of the sections of the Chonhar bridge in the Russian-occupied part of the Kherson region, said the Militarnyi, a Ukrainian defense media outlet, after analyzing the Dnipro Osint project’s satellite images.
The Chonhar bridge is a key transportation point for Russian logistics because it connects occupied Crimea to the mainland in southern Ukraine. This route connects to the P-280 highway, which Russia uses as part of a land corridor through the occupied Ukrainian territories in the south.
In early June, Ukrainian forces attacked the Chonhar bridge with Behemoth and FP-2 drones. The Russians set up a pontoon crossing nearby, since traffic across the bridge had been completely cut off.
According to Militarnyi, satellite images showed heavy traffic on the pontoon crossing, with dozens of Russian trucks spotted. The Ukrainian forces also launched strikes against this alternative route.
Because of damage to the Chonhar transit point, the Russians also had to organize alternative routes through Armiansk and Perekop. But the Chonhar path remained one of the main supply routes for the Russian forces in the occupied south of Ukraine.
Satellite images from late September showed at least three large holes in the road surface on the bridge and the nearby crossing. OSINT analysts also recorded the collapse of one section of the bridge. The damage caused traffic jams, particularly involving trucks, Militarnyi said.
Analysts added that traffic through the Chonhar transit point hasn’t come to a complete stop because the Russians are using the nearby old highway bridge and a fill crossing.
