UKRAINE, KHARKIV, Dec 18 – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced shortlists in 10 categories for the 97th Academy Awards. The shortlist includes a film that tells the story of Kharkiv in the context of the full-scale invasion, according to a press release on the official Oscar website.
Porcelain War, directed by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontiev, was nominated in the Documentary Feature category.
The film tells the story of three Ukrainian artists making porcelain animal sculptures, who stayed in Kharkiv since the first days of the Russia’s all-out war and have been decorating destroyed houses with their creations.
Another film, Once Upon a Time in Ukraine, also about Russian-Ukrainian war, was nominated in the category Documentary Short Film.
On March 10, 2024, the Ukrainian documentary film 20 Days in Mariupol, directed by Mstyslav Chernovol, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature during the 96th Oscars ceremony in Los Angeles. This marked the first time a Ukrainian film received the award. The film captures the harrowing events in Mariupol during the early days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, documenting attacks on residential buildings and a maternity hospital.
