Ukraine’s telephone company Ukrtelecom launched a network of free Wi-Fi zones on the streets of five Ukrainian cities. Kharkiv is among them.

City Wi-Fi now works in Kyiv, Dnipro, Lviv, Odesa, and Kharkiv. This became possible thanks to the modernization of the infrastructure a few years ago when street cabinets were installed in the cities to connect the subscriber line with the network core.

“During the war, we all band together and help each other. As a telecom operator, we are also looking for a solution so that people can use the Internet in the city when it is not at home. Therefore, having certain opportunities, we implement various initiatives. After all, there can hardly be too much free Internet. The project of free Wi-Fi on the streets of big cities is one of the initiatives. It is important for us that Ukrainians stay in touch with their loved ones, relatives, and colleagues during these challenging times,” says Denys Zakharenko, Ukrtelecom`s director of Mass market sales and marketing department.

When the power goes out, the Internet will continue working for from two to four hours. The network is called UKRTELECOM_FREE.

The company promises to provide a speed of up to 20 megabits per second with an average radius of up to 10 meters from the distribution cabinet. However, the actual speed will depend on the number of consumers using the Internet at the same time and the technical parameters of their devices.

Ukrtelecom announced the project in January. The company’s director Yurii Kurma planned to create more than 700 Wi-Fi zones in Ukrainian cities.
