RUSSIA, KURSK OBLAST, Jul. 21 — Ukrainian forces attacked a military airfield, Khalino, located 7 kilometers (~4 miles) from Kursk, Russia, damaging a MiG-29 aircraft, the General Staff reported.

The MiG-29 is a Soviet multi-role aircraft with high maneuverability, designed to achieve air superiority and intercept opponent’s aircrafts. The Russians likely used this aircraft to intercept Ukrainian long-range kamikaze drones flying to strike targets deep in Russian territory, Militarnyi, a Ukrainian defense media outlet, said.

The 15th Separate Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade, called Black Forest, conducted the operation. Footage published by the General Staff shows that they used attack drones to destroy Russian military equipment.

Also, Black Forest soldiers damaged an anti-aircraft artillery system called Pantsir. According to Militarnyi, the system was in a combat position and was supposed to defend the airfield against Ukrainian drones and missiles.

Earlier, Militarnyi reported that in 2023, Ukrainian drones attacked the Khalino airfield, wounding high-ranking Russian officers and pilots.

Also in 2025, the Ukrainian military destroyed a storage building for aviation weapons at the airfield.
