April 24 — The Polish President, Andrzej Duda, said that a future peace deal will require compromises both from Ukraine and Russia, stressing that only the United States has the power to stop Vladimir Putin.
“It is only this American pressure that can really bring this war to an end and help forge a peace that will not be comfortable for either side,” Duda said in the exclusive interview with Euronews on Moscow’s ongoing war in Ukraine, posted on April 24.
The interview was conducted after the London negotiations, which followed a summit in Paris on April 17, where American officials outlined a controversial peace framework that includes U.S. recognition of Crimea as part of Russia.
“Ukraine does not legally recognize the occupation of Crimea. It is the territory of the Ukrainian people. There is nothing to talk about because it is beyond our Constitution,” said the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy in reaction to the “final offer.”
In the interview for Euronews, Andrzej Duda said that war is exhausting Russia and “exploiting Ukraine in a terrible way.” Duda is sure that Ukraine will have to make concessions in peace talks.
“It has to be a compromise. I mean, de facto this peace should, in my personal opinion, come down to the fact that neither side will be able to say that it won this war, because each side in some sense will have to step down,” Duda said.
The Ukrainian government sees Trump’s so-called “final” proposal “as highly biased towards Russia” because it says very clearly what Russia will get, but Ukrainian gains are vague and general.
One of the parts of Trump’s “final” proposal for Ukraine is the return of the small part of the Kharkiv oblast Russia has occupied.
