US, Aug 26 — Elina Svitolina, ranked No. 12 in the world, lost to Hungary’s Anna Bondar in the first round and eliminated from the 2025 US Open tournament, reported Ukrainian media Suspilne Sport.
Anna Bondar, Svitolina’s opponent, is ranked No. 97. The two had previously met twice at Grand Slam tournaments earlier in the year: in the second round of 2025 Roland Garros and the first round of 2025 Wimbledon, with Svitolina winning both matches.
The match lasted 100 minutes and ended in a 2:6, 4:6 score defeat for Svitolina.
With this loss, Svitolina’s win streak of 21 in the first rounds of Grand Slam tournaments ended. This was the best result for women’s tennis.
Before this, Svitolina had last failed to advance past the first round of a Grand Slam tournament in 2018. Back then, ranked No. 5, she lost to Germany’s Tatjana Maria in the opening round of Wimbledon.
The loss to Bondar also marked Svitolina’s worst result at the US Open in 11 years. In 2014, Slovenia’s Polona Hercog defeated Svitolina in the first round.
