UKRAINE, Oct. 23 — Ukraine doesn’t record any removal of restrictions on Starlink’s terminal speed, Serhii Flash Beskrestnov, EW expert and defense advisor to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said.
On the night of Oct. 14, SpaceX limited the connection on fast-moving Starlink terminals — if an object to which the terminal is attached is moving at speeds exceeding 160 km/h (100 mph), the connection disappears.
The limits apply to the military version of the Starlink satellite communication system, known as Starshield, which has reportedly disrupted several important combat operations, as the Ukrainian military was not warned of changes in the terminals’ work.
Serhii Sternenko, a former advisor to the Minister of Defense and a volunteer, suggested that SpaceX took these measures at the request of Donald Trump, the US president. At the same time, standard satellite communication terminals were working as usual.
According to Flash, there are some cases where drones using Starlink may move slightly faster than the speed limit. “But this is likely caused by the way SpaceX’s algorithm works or by specific use case’s conditions, rather than a lifting of the speed limit,” he said.
