Oct. 21 — The European Commission has called on SpaceX, an American aerospace company owned by Elon Musk, to restore high-speed Starlink satellite communications for Ukraine fully, said Toma Renier, the European Commission’s official spokesperson on defense and space affairs.
Since Oct. 14, SpaceX or the White House has reportedly imposed a 100-mile-per-hour limit on drones and vehicles moving, equipped with Starlink terminals using Starshield, a military arm of the company. These limitations severely hampered Ukrainian drone operations, including those related to countering Russia’s jet-powered drones using interceptor drones.
Yesterday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, during his meeting with Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, said Starlink communications will be restored in 48 hours.
Renier said that Starlink communications remain important for maintaining communication between Ukrainian military units, protecting the civilian population, and drone control, which Kyiv actively uses to defend the country’s territory.
The European official also expressed deep concern, saying that the current restrictions contradict the company’s previous practices.
