UKRAINE, KHARKIV, Dec 5 – On December 4, the memorial in honor of the fallen Ukrainian soldiers was opened near the regional council building in Kharkiv. The initiative was implemented as part of the Memorial of People’s Memory project and is dedicated to the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which is celebrated on December 6.
This is the first place in the city where residents can honor the memory of the defenders.
“Unfortunately, before that, there was no place in Kharkiv where you could come and honor the memory of a defender. I also think we chose the right place because the regional council building is a center where there are always a lot of people, so everyone will see the memorial,” said Maryna Polyakova, head of the All-Ukrainian Association of Families of Missing and Fallen.
At the location, there are large flags of the Armed Forces’ units and small flags, each symbolizing the fallen heroes, calling on Kharkiv residents to remember the sacrifice of Ukrainian soldiers.
On November 21, Kharkiv initiated the creation of a memorial complex that will preserve the memory of the victims of the Russian armed aggression and become a “symbol of the resilience of Kharkiv residents.”
“We have too big of a ‘wound’ that will never heal, but there must be a place where people can remember the victims, express their gratitude, sorrow, and respect,” said Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov explaining the need for this project.
