UKRAINE, KHARKIV OBLAST, Oct. 12 — Ukrainian forces recently “either advanced or maintained positions” in the north and counterattacked in the east of Kharkiv oblast, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in its assessment.
The ISW said that Ukrainian troops advanced near Velykyi Burluk, a settlement located 68 kilometers (~42 miles) northeast of Kharkiv, in the Burluk river valley. At the same time, Russian forces conducted an infiltration mission in the area.
According to analysts, three Ukrainian tanks on the T-2104 Vovchansk-Chuhunivka highway near Anyshchyne struck Russian positions. The ISW’s footage showed that Ukrainian forces advanced to the highway and that Russian forces had infiltrated southwest of Anyshchyne.
Ukrainian forces appear to be using a new protection tactic involving the use of drone escorts to intercept Russian drones attempting to strike Ukrainian tanks, the ISW wrote. Earlier, the CODE 9.2 regiment used the same tactic to attack Russian positions near Vilkhuvatka village in the Kharkiv oblast.
At the same time, the OSINT analysts from AMK Mapping said that Russian forces reversed much of the earlier Ukrainian counterattacks, regaining control over the villages of Anyshchyne and Vodyane and re-entering Ivashchyne.
In eastern Kharkiv oblast, crossing the Oskil river remains the main Russian task, the ISW said. The Oskil river runs through Kupiansk, an important logistics hub that connects the region with Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.
According to the ISW, on Oct. 10-22, Russian soldiers attacked southeast of Kupiansk, while Ukrainian forces counterattacked northeast of the city and near Radkivka village north of Kupiansk.
Also, the ISW reported on the Russian attack on the Ukrainian ground line of communication over the Oskil river. They struck a bridge near Petrivka, a village south of Kupiansk.
