The poetry collection “tarsi žuvį į juodą krantą”, which means “like a fish on a black bank”, is to be released in Lithuania.

The publication of the book was announced by the Kitos Knygos publishing house. The poems were translated by Vytautas Dekšnis, the collection was compiled by poet and translator Marius Burokas.

“One of Zhadan’s collections was called God Sympathizes with Outsiders. It seems that he set Zhadan a test – he gave him a great talent, settled him in Ukraine, and told him to describe it in poetry. As many as he could. And he succeeded. Zhadan is a modern Ukrainian Whitman. His poetry covers the whole of Ukraine: from factories to the steppe, from petty criminals to heroes. Just sit down before you start reading, because the powerful impulse of the book will really knock you off your feet,” said Marius Burokas.

The book is being published to coincide with the Vilnius International Book Fair, which will take place from February 23 to 26 in the Lithuanian capital, and Ukraine will also join.

This is Zhadan’s fourth book published by the publishing house. Previously, three novels by the writer were printed: “The Orphanage”, “Depeche Mode” and “Anarchy in the UKR”.

  • Kharkiv writer and musician Serhiy Zhadan was awarded the Schwarzkopf Europe Prize for his support of democratic values.
  • Serhiy also got Polish Award named after Sergio de Molla. The Sergio de Molla Prize is awarded in Poland for a significant contribution to the struggle for human rights, named after the Brazilian diplomat, who worked for the UN for more than 34 years.
