UKRAINE, KHARKIV July 30 — The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained an alleged Russian military intelligence spy in Kharkiv who was preparing a new series of missile and bomb attacks on Kharkiv, reported SBU spokesman Vladyslav Abdula.
Since the start of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, more than 1,000 people in the Kharkiv Oblast have received a notice of suspicion in proceedings over treason, collaboration, and dissemination of information about the movement of the Armed Forces.
Abdula said that the main targets of the Russian army were secret places where important technical documents were stored. Russian troops wanted to destroy technological documents, plans, and drawings stored in Kharkiv, which were necessary for restoring industrial enterprises [damaged by Russian aggression — ed.] in the region. For this task, they recruited a Russian citizen living in Kharkiv who worked in a bank.
The SBU reported that the man allegedly tried to obtain the information using his acquaintance, an employee of one of the local government agencies, who had access to classified information. Under the guise of ordinary communication in a messenger, he asked the woman about the location of secret document storage facilities.
In addition, the SBU reports that the man was also spying on the locations of the Defense Forces in Kharkiv. To do this, he constantly drove around the city in his car and recorded locations on a hidden video recorder.
Abdula said that the spy had direct contact with a General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces’ representative. They communicated via an anonymous chat in a messenger.
During a search of the suspect’s house, SBU officers found a Russian passport, a video recorder, and a phone with evidence of criminal activities.
Earlier, the SBU’s press service reported that they have detained a married couple on suspicion of working for the Russian FSB and leaking coordinates for a new Russian missile strike on the units of the Defense Forces in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions.
