UKRAINE, KHARKIV, Aug. 27 — Russian forces attacked the Epicenter shopping mall in Kharkiv’s Osnovianskyi district, killing a 40-year-old man and injuring four people, said Oleh Syniehubov, the governor of the region.
This attack marks a new Russian tactic of targeting Ukrainian shopping malls and civilian infrastructure. On Aug. 22, Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, said that such attacks help Russian forces accomplish their combat tasks, according to Moscow Times, a Russian independent media outlet.
“These airstrikes are effective and timely,” Putin said.
Russia has completely destroyed 10 Epicenters and damaged 13 more since the beginning of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In today’s attack, Russian forces used a jet-powered Shahed drone equipped with a camera for remote control, said Spartak Borysenko, head of the department for combating crimes committed in the context of armed conflict at the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
A Russian drone damaged Epicenter’s plumbing, so the building was immediately flooded following the attack, said Gwara journalists reporting from the impact site. She added that, as for now, emergency workers have evacuated all customers and staff from the damaged mall.
