US, WASHINGTON DC, Jul 14 — The US will send “top-of-the-line weapons” to NATO, and NATO will coordinate their distribution in Ukraine, American President Donald Trump said at the joint conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the White House.
It’s unknown what weapons exactly the US wants to send — there was no mention of offensive weapons on the conference — but Trump mentioned they have 17 Patriots “that are ready to be shipped” to Ukraine. Patriot air defense systems are vital for the protection of Ukraine’s cities from Russian missile attacks.
Trump also threatened to impose “secondary tariffs” of 100% on Russia if the ceasefire deal on the Russia-Ukraine war isn’t made in 50 days.
Trump also expressed he’s “disappointed” in Russian leader Vladimir Putin. “My conversations with him are always very pleasant,” he said, adding that, right after (one of such conversations), the US first lady told him that another Ukrainian city had been hit with Russian missiles.
Today, Donald Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, arrived in Ukraine for a week to discuss strengthening US-Ukraine cooperation.
On July 7, Trump said the US will renew the weapons supply to Ukraine that was frozen by the Pentagon.
On June 2, Ukraine and Russia met in Istanbul for peace negotiations and agreed to exchange severely wounded and critically ill soldiers, all soldiers aged 18–25, and the repatriation of 6,000 killed troops.
During the Istanbul talks, the Russian side also said that the only way they’ll agree to end the war is if Kyiv gives up regions, which parts Moscow currently occupies, and limits Ukraine’s army. Ukraine rejected these demands.
