The symbols of the Soviet Union on the building of the Kharkiv City Council will be replaced with Ukrainian.
This was reported by Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov in an interview with the media “Dumka”.
Currently, replacement projects are being developed.
“These symbols will certainly be removed. Now we have covered them up, and I will explain why. We don’t want to spend extra money. First of all, this is an architectural monument, and changes to its appearance require certain approvals. Secondly, Ukrainian symbols should appear instead. Now we will see what exactly. There will be several sketch projects. When we choose, we will do it,” explained Terekhov.
Kharkiv City Council and other central municipal authorities are located in Constitution Square, one of the oldest places in Kharkiv. The landmark in the heart of the city became the place of many historical events, including the Kharkiv Euromaidan during the Revolution of Dignity in 2014.
The building of the Kharkiv City Council is a monument of cultural heritage. It was damaged by a Russian missile on March 1, according to the Ministry of Culture, the status of the building is “completely destroyed”. The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine reported that the restoration of the Kharkiv City Council would require about UAH 200 million / $5 million.
Earlier, Kharkiv Mayor Terekhov reported that about 400 Kharkiv toponyms related to the names of Russian cities and geographical objects located in Russia were planned to be renamed,
