Japan will provide almost $10 million to finance UNESCO’s special activities in Ukraine and neighboring countries in the field of culture, education, and journalist protection.
This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.
“Japan provided almost $10 million to finance UNESCO’s activities in Ukraine and neighboring countries in the fields of education, culture, and protection of journalists. This contribution makes Japan a leading partner of UNESCO in Ukraine,” Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko said.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization will support the protection and restoration of cultural heritage sites that can be submitted as world heritage. The organization will finance the continuation of the satellite monitoring system and the supply of additional equipment for the protection of cultural objects.
Moreover, UNESCO will provide psychological support and legal advice to journalists.
They plan to increase the number of training courses for media workers on how to protect themselves in war zones. The organization will deliver equipment so newsrooms can continue working under any conditions. They will support local media in Moldova, Romania, and Slovakia to provide information in Ukrainian to refugees living in these countries.
It is noted that this year, the Government of Japan will provide a record amount of funding for UNESCO — $16.1 million. This money will be allocated to projects in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Mozambique, Nigeria, Thailand, and Yemen.
Earlier, it was reported that UNESCO would allocate $50,000 for the conservation of the Hryhoriy Skovoroda Museum in Skovorodynivka in Kharkiv Oblast.
