UKRAINE, KHARKIV, Oct 17 — The Ukrainian film “The Porcelain War” directed by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontiev has been nominated for the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards. The film Once Upon a Time in Ukraine is also competing in the short film category. The nominees were announced on October 14 on the award’s website.

The film tells the story of three Ukrainian artists, Slava Leontiev, his wife Ania Stasenko, and their friend Andrii Stefanov. They stayed in Kharkiv, which has been under constant missile attacks since the first day of the full-scale invasion.

The film shows the lives of the artists who stayed in the city, fighting the Russians not only with weapons but also through art.

“This year’s nominated films and series offered us new ways to see the world, celebrate our heroes, and better understand difficult histories,” said Christopher Campbell, Critics Choice Association’s VP, Documentary. “We are excited to honor so many exceptional documentaries as we continue to recognize diverse voices and styles within the realm of nonfiction storytelling.”

“The Porcelain War” is competing in two categories, including Best New Documentary Director and Best Political Film.

The Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards recognize the best documentaries of the year. It was founded in 2016.
