UNITED STATES, INDIAN WELLS, Mar. 13 — Elina Svitolina, the Ukrainian top tennis player, defeated the second-ranked world player from Poland, Iga Swiatek, earning a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win in 2 hours and 9 minutes to reach her second Indian Wells semifinal and first since 2019.
Svitolina reached the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells after Czech player Kateřina Siniaková withdrew, reported Ukrainian media Suspilne Sport.
Before that, the Ukrainian had played five head-to-head matches against Swiatek, winning only one at Wimbledon 2023.
In total, Svitolina has defeated a top-10 player for the fourth time this season. She is currently ranked eighth in the WTA rankings.
In the semifinal on Mar. 14, Svitolina will face Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan. The two players are currently tied at 3–3 in head-to-head matches. They last faced off at the tournament in Madrid, where Svitolina won in straight sets.
