UKRAINE, Dec 10 – About 31.3% of Ukrainians believe that the best guarantee of Ukraine’s security is the state’s development of nuclear weapons, and 29.3% believe that it is the country’s gradual accession to NATO, say the results of the poll “Foreign Policy and Security. Attitudes of Ukrainian Society” conducted by the New Europe Center.

Ukraine is working to join NATO to strengthen its security, especially during the ongoing war with Russia. The country has made progress in meeting NATO standards and has support from many members, but no clear timeline for joining has been given yet.

According to the poll, other security options are less popular among Ukrainians. 11.2% believe in the effectiveness of a defense alliance with the United States. 8.9% of Ukrainians are ready to rely on UN peacekeepers, and only 6.4% of respondents believe in the effectiveness of European troops on the territory of Ukraine.

In recent years, Ukrainians related their main security expectations first of all to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and then to partnership opportunities.

The poll also said that 64.1% of Ukrainians agree that negotiations with Russia are not worthwhile unless Ukraine receives real security guarantees from the West.
