UKRAINE, KYIV, Aug 23 — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kyiv today and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reported the President’s website.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, numerous world leaders have visited Kyiv to show support for Ukraine. Notable visits include U.S. President Joe Biden, U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and French President Emmanuel Macron. These leaders have met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss aid, military support, and diplomatic strategies against Russian aggression.
According to the President’s website, this was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine since diplomatic relations were established between the two countries in 1992.
After the meeting with Zelenskyy, they issued a joint statement that discusses various aspects of India-Ukraine diplomatic relations. India reaffirmed “its principled position and focus on peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.” Both counties’ representatives, “reaffirmed their commitment to further developing bilateral ties for the benefit of the peoples of both countries based on mutual trust, respect, and openness.”
The Indian news agency ANI reported that Modi and Zelenskyy also honored the memory of Ukrainian children killed in the war during a visit to the multimedia exhibition “Martyrologist”.
On July 9, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and posted photos of himself and Putin on X saying he hopes their talks will “cement the bond of friendship.” He arrived in Russia a few hours after Russian troops attacked Ukraine, killing at least 41 people, including two at Ukraine’s largest children’s hospital, Okhmatdyt, in Kyiv.
On June 14, 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Narendra Modi during the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Italy. They discussed the development of bilateral relations between the two countries and the expansion of trade, including the Black Sea export corridor.
