UKRAINE, KHARKIV OBLAST, Nov 12 – In the Kharkiv region, there are underground educational spaces for schoolchildren where they can safely learn and relax. Gwara Media’s team has visited one of them.
Russia frequently attacks Kharkiv with various kinds of airstrikes because of its proximity to the border and frontline. To provide safe online education for children, local authorities and humanitarian organizations built several underground schools throughout the city.
In this educational space, 40% of students attend face-to-face classes in various subjects, while the rest study remotely because most children are abroad.
There are 27 teachers in the institution. The space is safe and serves as a shelter where children can go during an air raid alert.
The classes are based on the subjects that students study in the curriculum. Middle and high school students receive consultations on basic and specialized subjects, such as art and computer science.
“Not all children can attend classes, as some live in distant community areas, and some are now living abroad. We are currently restoring our facility [the school itself that’s located above the educational space — ed.] after the Russian missiles hit it. The priority is to replace the windows,” the administration said.
On October 4, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said on Ukrainian TV that there are plans to build three more underground schools in Kharkiv, as demand for hybrid education is growing.
