The train arrived from Kyiv to thank Ukrainians for their efforts to overcome the consequences of the Russian invasion in the frontline and de-occupied territories with festive dishes prepared on board.
“Railway workers continue to save civilians and are among the first to come to the rescue where it is needed most. Together with the Howard Buffett Foundation, we have launched another unique project that has no analogues. The food train has already passed a test run, and in the near future the joint team of Ukrzaliznytsia and the foundation will be on permanent duty in the most difficult frontline areas of Ukraine, where heat and food are critical to life,” said Yevhen Liashchenko, Chairman of the Board of Ukrzaliznytsia.
The train is about 0.15 kilometers / 0,094 miles long and consists of 6 cars:
- a generator car with a capacity of up to 400 kW and its gas station;
- a refrigerator car with a freezer for food storage;
- two cars with cold and hot kitchens for direct cooking, respectively;
- a car for train staff and cooks with a shower and a washing machine;
- a luggage car with a capacity of 27,000 liters of water and a filtration and pumping station.
The project’s co-founder Howard Buffett is scheduled to join one of the trips in December. With the Food Train team, he will offer food to all Ukrainians along the front line and in the de-occupied territories.
The Food Train can operate autonomously for 5–7 days and prepare more than 10 thousand meals daily. At the same time, only 14 chefs and 7 railroad workers are needed to prepare this number of meals and keep the train running.
