BRAZIL, RIO DE JANEIRO, Jun 25 — The world’s largest summit dedicated to fact-checking, Global Fact, starts in Rio de Janeiro, to be held until June 27, organized by the International Fact-Checking Network at Poynter’s Institute in partnership with Aos Fatos, Agência Lupa, Estadao Verifica, and Uol Confere.

Gwara Media’s editor-in-chief Serhii Prokopenko and fact-check editor Yuliana Topolnyk joined the summit today at IFCN’s invitation based on their “expertise and contributions to the field.”

Prokopenko said that, in today’s volatile world, where authoritarians are gaining even more power and the issue of disinformation is often left unaddressed, it’s especially vital to form international coalitions to counter disinformation.

“We came to Global Fact in Brazil to plan new projects and join, as a Ukrainian organization from Kharkiv, systemic work to dismantle disinformation. Our experience of promoting fact-checking right from the city close to the frontline during Russia’s full-scale war should enhance the international efforts in the field.”

This year’s Global Fact agenda is to discuss tech policy, the impact of artificial intelligence, climate change projects, financial sustainability and challenges for fact-checkers, media literacy, and other questions.
