UKRAINE, Nov 20 – During the 1,000 days of the full-scale invasion, the Russian army fired more than 1,000 missiles at Ukraine’s energy system. In addition, Russia has occupied more than 18 gigawatts of energy capacity, reported the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.
In the spring of 2024, the Russian army attacked Ukrainian energy facilities with missiles and drone strikes. On May 8, the Prime Minister reported that they had destroyed or damaged 800 heating facilities in the country. In particular, the March attacks destroyed the power and heating infrastructure supplying Kharkiv and its region.
In 2024, the Russians destroyed and damaged more than 9 gigawatts of power capacity, equal to the peak consumption of countries such as the Netherlands or Finland, the Energy Ministry wrote.
“Despite this, Ukraine’s energy system continues to operate, and power engineers return electricity to homes every day, over and over again,” the report said.
The Ministry of Energy said that on the night of February 24, 2022, Ukraine disconnected from the Russian and Belarusian power systems, and on March 16, 2022, it joined the European ENTSO-E.
Since the full-scale invasion, Ukraine has received more than 19,000 tons of humanitarian aid from 36 countries to stabilize the energy system.
