UKRAINE, KHARKIV OBLAST, Sep. 17 — On Sep. 17, the 57th Motorized Brigade said that they captured a Kenyan citizen on the Vovchansk axis. His name is Evans, and Russians probably tricked him into joining the army.
“The interview was recorded with the prisoner’s consent, but it is important to remember that this is a person who fought on the side of the enemy, so whether to believe his words and tears is up to you,” said the brigade.
A 36-year-old Evans arrived in Russia as a tourist. The day before returning home, his guide asked if he wanted to stay in the country and offered him employment.
Then Evans signed documents written in Russian, which he did not understand. The documents turned out to be an employment contract for the Russian armed forces.
Evans did not want to be a soldier. He says he was given no choice, that Russians threatened to execute him for refusing to obey orders. After a week of military training, the man was sent to combat positions.
Almost immediately, he escaped from the Russians and, after two days of searching, found the positions of the Ukrainian military.
“No, not to Russia, please. To another country, but not Russia. I don’t want to go to Russia. I’ll die there,” Evans said about the possibility of being exchanged to Russia.
Evans worked as a professional sportsman in Kenya. He has a 16-year-old daughter.
