UKRAINE, Dec 24 — 73% of Ukrainians support the idea of restoring the nuclear weapons for Ukraine, while 20% do not support this idea, shows Kyiv International Institute of Sociology’s poll. The remaining 7% have undecided views.

In mid-1994, 50% of Ukrainians were in favor of a nuclear-free Ukraine, and 30% were in favor of owning nuclear weapons, show results of the poll conducted by the KIIS back then.

According to the poll, in 2024, the percentage of those supporting the restoration of nuclear potential drops to 46% if Ukraine loses Western support and sanctions against Russia are lifted. In such a case, 44% of respondents oppose possessing nuclear weapons.

If Ukraine has enough resources to hold out until it obtains nuclear weapons, 58% of respondents would be willing to lose Western support to obtain nuclear weapons. In this scenario, 33% would not support obtaining nuclear weapons. The remaining 8% are undecided.

On December 10, the New Europe Center published the results of the poll “Foreign Policy and Security. Attitudes of Ukrainian Society,” which showed that about 31.3% of Ukrainians believe that the best guarantee of Ukraine’s security is the creation of nuclear weapons by the state, and 29.3% believe that the best guarantee of security is the country’s gradual accession to NATO.
