Jul 1 — Over 14 million people in the world could die in the next five years because Donald Trump’s administration decided to cut the financing of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), said Reuters, referring to the study published in the Lancet medical journal.

“Over the past two decades, USAID-funded programmes have helped prevent more than 91 million deaths globally, including 30 million deaths among children,” said the study.

Lancet’s projections suggest that ongoing deep funding cuts — combined with the potential dismantling of the agency — could result in more than 14 million additional deaths by 2030, including 4.5 million deaths among children younger than 5 years.

The US is still the world’s biggest donor of humanitarian aid, with at least 38% of all contributions recorded by the UN.

On January 26, USAID announced the funding pause of all its programs and projects because of the United States Department of State directive ordering a 90-day audit.

According to the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology poll, 22% of Ukrainians think that a pause in the realisation of humanitarian USAID projects will have a bad influence because these projects helped to develop Ukraine.

Ukrainian community organizations and local municipalities faced the necessity of shutting down the projects that were financed by the USAID. The projects were connected to economic development, humanitarian aid, democracy and human rights.
