UKRAINE, Aug 21 — Ukrainians who doubt that Ukraine will be a successful EU member in 10 years believe that corruption is standing in the way, says the poll conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.

Researchers say respondents who considered it unlikely or doubted a happy future in 10 years were asked an additional open-ended question — why exactly do they think so. 

The most popular answer was the prevalence of corruption in Ukraine. 

Other answers included lack of effectiveness or dissatisfaction with the Ukrainian government, the EU’s unwillingness to accept Ukraine, the fact that reconstruction will take more than 10 years, and the significant destruction of the country because of the Russian attacks.

Overall, 53% believe it is likely or very likely that Ukraine will be a successful EU member in 10 years. 40% think this is unlikely or very unlikely.

In July, Kharkiv residents joined the protests against the law that compromises the independence of the Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies — the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) — by subordinating them to the Prosecutor’s General.

On July 31, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law restoring the independence of anti-corruption agencies.
