Jun 2 — On June 1, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) conducted a special operation called “Spiderweb,” attacking strategic aviation deep in Russia with FPV drones. The SBU damaged 34% of strategic carriers of cruise missiles that cost $7 billion.
Cruise missiles are a constant threat for Ukrainians because Russia launched them for massive attacks from aircraft, ground launchers, ships, and submarines.
“The enemy has been bombing our country almost every night from these aircraft, and today they actually felt that ‘revenge is inevitable.’” The SBU is doing everything possible to protect Ukraine and stop Russian attacks,” said Vasyl Maliuk, the head of the SBU.
He also noted that the SBU attacked Belaya, Dyagilevo, Olenya, and Ivanovo air bases, damaging 41 aircrafts, including A-50, Tu-95, Tu-22, M3, and Tu-160.
The Security Service conducted the operation in four time zones simultaneously, and the logistics were very difficult, SBU reported. Preparation took more than half a year. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, personally supervised the operation, and Maliuk, with the SBU employers, organized the “Spiderweb.”
The SBU used wooden modular houses with drones hiding in the roofs, which could be opened remotely. The houses were transported by trucks to the nearest locations from Russian air bases, from where the drones would take off to attack aircraft.
Zelenskyy said that SBU used 117 drones for the “Spiderweb.”
“Planning, organization, every detail was perfectly executed. I can say with certainty that this is a unique operation,” he said.
