Apr. 6 — In March, Ukraine “overshoot” Russia in the number of drone attacks for the first time since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war, said ABC News, analyzing daily data published by the Ukrainian Air Force and Russian Ministry of Defense.
According to ABC News, Russian air defense shot down 7,347 Ukrainian drones in March, which is the highest monthly total ever reported by Moscow and an average of 237 craft each day.
At the same time, Ukrainian air forces faced 6,462 Russian drones and 138 missiles, intercepting or shooting down 5,833 drones and 102 missiles, which is around 90% of drones and just 74% of missiles.
The journalists counted that Ukraine faced a daily average of over 208 drones and four missiles in March.
Also, in March, Russia set a new record of combined drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, launching 6,600 units of weapons. The heaviest attack took place on Mar. 24, when the Russians launched 948 drones and 34 missiles at Ukraine.
“But March’s data suggests the balance may be shifting more in Ukraine’s favor, as Kyiv’s long-term efforts to expand its drone and missile capabilities bear fruit,” said ABC News.
Journalists said that most of Ukraine’s strikes have been carried out using domestically produced drones. In addition, Ukraine is increasingly using interceptor drones.
Over the past year, Ukraine has focused particularly on attacks on Russian oil refining and transportation facilities, hoping, according to Ukrainian leaders, to cut off a key source of funding for Moscow and its armed forces.
ABC News said it is unable to independently verify the data released by Russia and Ukraine, suggesting that both sides may be attempting to exaggerate the effectiveness of their air defense systems.
