UKRAINE, VOVCHANSK, Dec. 4 — Russian troops advanced in Vovchansk, reported the OSINT monitoring group DeepState that maintains a map that tracks the development of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Ruslan Mykula, co-founder of DeepState, told Gwara Media that, as of Dec. 2-3, Ukrainian units are present in Vovchansk and keep defending the southern part of the city despite Russia’s claims about the complete occupation of it.

“Russian troops have successes in Vovchansk, on its western outskirts, in the forests there. Also, they are trying to go around Vovchansk from the west and southwest,” Mykula said. He added that the situation in the city aligns with Ukraine’s military command’s statements about it.

On Dec. 1, the Kremlin claimed Russian forces occupied Vovchansk and Pokrovsk, which Ukraine’s General Staff denied. They said the lies Russia tells are to hide “critical losses” of the Russian army that is forced to conduct “meat assaults.” The Kremlin showed photos of the Russian flag installed in Vovchansk. On Dec. 2, soldiers of the 57th Otaman Kost Hordiienko Motorized Brigade published a video where they killed Russian soldiers who were trying to install a Russian flag in the city. On Nov. 30, Russia tried to raise its flag in the city for the third time this autumn.
