UKRAINE, BALAKLIIA, Aug 21 — Sultan Pashotov, a Russian soldier with call sign Tyson, was sentenced to 11 years in prison in absentia for torturing civilians with electric shock in Balakliia, said Vladyslav Abdula, the spokesperson of the Ukrainian Security Service.
Balakliia is a city in the Izium district, more than 55 miles (90 kilometers) from Kharkiv. The Russian army occupied the city in March 2022, and Ukrainian troops liberated it during the Kharkiv counteroffensive in September 2022.
During the occupation of the city, Tyson, with other Russian servicemen, set up a torture room in the local police department building. They brought dozens of kidnapped citizens there.
“In this room, Russians cruelly tortured people. They captured locals in unsanitary conditions without food and water. Russians also used an electric shock in the torture process,” said Abdula.
Russians attempted to force Balakliia citizens to work with them in that way.
On August 19, prosecutors brought to court the case of a Russian soldier involved in the execution of Ukrainian soldiers at the Vovchansk aggregate plant in the Kharkiv region.
