UKRAINE, IZIUM, Feb. 17 — Over Feb. 14-15, because of warming temperatures, 139 houses and the basement of a multi-apartment building in Izium in eastern Kharkiv oblast were flooded, said Yevhen Vasylenko, a spokesman for Kharkiv’s State Emergency Service, to Gwara Media.
During this period, the region received between 20 and 40 mm (0,787 and 1,575 inches) of rainfall.
Rain and warm weather made snow and ice melt, which led to flooding on rivers in the Kharkiv region with minor overflow onto floodplains, said Liudmyla Ozerna, the head of the forecasting sector at the Kharkiv Regional Center for Hydrometeorology, to Suspilne Kharkiv.
As of Feb. 16, Kharkiv region’s emergency services still received requests from the settlements to deal with the consequences of flooding.
Work is currently continuing in several settlements in the Bohodukhiv, Kharkiv, Chuhuiv districts, and the Velykyi Burluk community.
