UKRAINE, KHARKIV, Sep. 2 — Russian attacks have caused $1.6 million worth of damage to Kharkiv National Medical University since the start of the full-scale invasion, said rector Valerii Miasoiedov in an interview with Gwara Media.
The university is one of the biggest multidisciplinary educational institutions in Ukraine, which trains medical specialists based on international standards.
Miasoiedov said that they recorded the biggest damage on Mar. 1, 2025. That day, a Russian attack drone hit the building of the Research Institute of Occupational Hygiene and Occupational Diseases.
Russian attacks damaged the university’s dormitories, dental center, and academic buildings, including the main building. Thus, 756 windows were smashed and 5300 square meters of the roof were damaged.
“The university is working on rebuilding, because life goes on, and we find opportunities to restore what has been damaged,” said Miasoiedov.
On Sep 1, three underground schools opened in Kharkiv. On the same day, the children started studying in one of them, which is located in Saltivskyi district — the closest to the border with Russia.
