UKRAINE, Apr 24 — 57% of women in Ukraine who work in male-dominated fields experience sexism and face gender discrimination.

These are the numbers from an anonymous poll conducted by the non-governmental organization (NGO) “New Ukrainian Narratives” as part of the communication campaign “Not a woman’s job” within the “Equality. Leadership. Future” initiative.

Women from 15 to 55 years old participated in the poll. Most of them work in police, fields of manufacturing and development, transportation and logistics, IT and technology, or science.

Respondents said that the most widespread forms of discrimination are:

  • sexist stereotypes (43%) 
  • barriers in career advancement (27%) — “glass ceiling” effect
  • lower salaries (23%) than men’s for doing the same job
  • sexual harassment (18%) 
  • denial of employment because of gender (11%)
  • lack of flexibility in work hours or parental leave (10%) 

Currently, women run about 449,000 businesses in Ukraine, almost every third company. In Kharkiv Oblast, 23,562 women are the head of the business, making the region the sixth largest in the country by this indicator.
